Hi
I am Vijayakumari Sharon Govender. I have three great passions in life: art, travel and animals. My mum tells me that I began to hold a pencil at 9 months. My dad was the greatest source of ispiration in my life. He was an artist himself and therefore gave me the tools I needed for creativity. Being an only child with no siblings to fight and bicker with, I turned to my sketchbook as my sole companion. To this day I find comfort and joy in art.
I was born in South Africa and am a 5th generation Indian. I grew up in the apartheid era, attending an all Indian university and I taught art at an all Indian school until South Africa was liberated in 1994. I am proud to say I voted in a historic election when Nelson Mandela was appointed President. In 2003, my husband was transferred to Dayton , Ohio. We packed up log, stock and dogs. Yes, I brought my faithful yellow Lab and maltese with me to the U.S.A.
I live in an active art community in Dayton, and have enriched myself in many ways. I currently focus on mixed media and photography, but I also have a background in ceramics. During the summer I teach art camps with a focus on various cultures and their arts viz. India, China, Japan, Egypt and Africa.
I have travelled to many parts of the world and enjoy sharing my experiences with the kids, like my visit to King Tut's tomb, explorations in India and China, my whirlwind travel of Europe, swimming in the Amazon, walking around the caldera in Greece, and recently scuba diving in Hawaai. I use my digital to capture the beauty of all these wonderful places.
My artworks therefore have diverse themes and styles, reflective of my diverse background. I hope you will enjoy viewing my works and someday add one to your collection.
